Benning, Residential neighborhood in Northeast, Washington DC, United States.
Benning is a residential neighborhood in Northeast Washington DC, crossed by Minnesota Avenue and East Capitol Street. The streets are lined with single-family homes, and the neighborhood borders Fort Circle Park and Fort Chaplin Park to the south.
The neighborhood takes its name from William Benning, a farmer and landowner who held large tracts of land in the area during the 1800s. The growth of road infrastructure and the city's expansion toward the northeast shaped its later development.
The Benning Road Library is a gathering point where people read, attend programs, and spend time together in a relaxed setting. The streets around it give a sense of a neighborhood where daily life happens mostly outdoors, on porches and sidewalks.
The Benning Road Metro station on the Blue and Silver Lines connects the neighborhood to downtown and other parts of the city. Public transit covers the main corridors well, though having a vehicle helps when exploring streets further from the main avenues.
Fort Circle Park and Fort Chaplin Park contain preserved earthworks from the Civil War, part of a ring of fortifications that once surrounded Washington DC during the conflict. These mounds and ditches are still visible today, sitting quietly within a modern residential area.
