Insectarium, Insect museum in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
The Insectarium was an insect museum located in Northeast Philadelphia with three floors of exhibits dedicated to arthropods. Visitors could observe live terrariums containing beetles, tarantulas, and centipedes alongside preserved specimens displayed in glass cases throughout the facility.
The museum was founded in 1992 when the owner started with a simple fish tank display that gradually expanded into a major insect collection. Over time, it grew to become the largest insect museum in the United States.
The converted firehouse served as an educational space where visitors could observe insects through interactive displays and preserved collections that brought these creatures to life. Programs and exhibits here helped people understand how these animals live and behave in ways that felt relevant to everyday life.
The museum was located on Frankford Avenue and could be reached via nearby streets, with easy access for visitors traveling through the city. Clear signage and straightforward directions from major roads made it simple to find the location.
The museum featured a Model Roach Kitchen exhibit that housed thousands of cockroaches in a controlled environment to demonstrate their behavior patterns. This unusual display revealed how these insects interact and organize themselves in ways that challenged common misconceptions.
