Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge, Road bridge in North Kingstown, United States
The Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge is a concrete road bridge that crosses the West Passage of Narragansett Bay with four traffic lanes. It rises about 120 meters above the water and serves as the main crossing between the mainland and Jamestown.
Built between 1985 and 1992, this bridge replaced an older structure from 1940 that eventually developed structural problems. The newer design reflected advances in concrete construction technology of that era.
The bridge carries the name of Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, who contributed to early American maritime exploration and navigation developments.
Vehicles use this bridge daily on Route 138 to travel between the mainland and Jamestown. The crossing is available year-round, though weather conditions can occasionally affect driving conditions.
The bridge features double-cell concrete chambers for structural support, yet pedestrians cannot normally cross it. This restriction sets it apart from many other major crossings in the region.
