John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, National wildlife refuge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is a federally protected nature reserve in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, built around the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in the state. The marsh is fed by Darby Creek, which winds through the area alongside ponds, wetlands, and stretches of forested land.

The land was once a large wetland that shrank over time due to farming, urban growth, and landfill activity that ate into its edges. A portion of the land was donated by Gulf Oil in 1955, and the refuge officially opened to the public in 1972 after years of pressure from development.

The refuge sits close to central Philadelphia and is easily reached from Interstate 95 via exit 14, following signs toward Lindbergh Boulevard. A visitor center on site helps orient first-time guests, and fishing rods can be borrowed at no charge, though you need to bring your own bait.

The refuge sits just about a mile from Philadelphia International Airport, yet over 300 bird species are recorded there each year, including rare ones like the Coastal Leopard Frog found in the marsh. The Cusano Environmental Education Center on site was built using green building methods and won awards for its design.
