Jesse Hepler Lilac Arboretum, Botanical garden at University of New Hampshire, Durham, United States.
The Jesse Hepler Lilac Arboretum was a collection of over 600 lilac varieties at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. The plants were arranged along paths behind Thompson Hall and served botanical research purposes.
Jesse R. Hepler, chairman of the horticulture department, founded this scientific collection in 1940. It remained active until its closure in 1980.
The collection displayed seven color classes of lilac blooms, which is the state flower of New Hampshire. This garden held importance for botanical teaching and research at the university.
The grounds were located behind the main university building and were easy to walk through on paths. The garden was connected to the research facility at Woodman Farm.
When the arboretum closed in 1980, local residents collected all available plants in a matter of minutes to save them. The specimens were then replanted in private gardens across the community.
