Josh Gibson, Baseball player sculpture at Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.

This eight-foot-tall white bronze statue depicts Josh Gibson in batting position on a sturdy granite base at Center Field Plaza. The sculpture sits in the outdoor area of Nationals Park, allowing visitors clear views of the figure and its surroundings.

Created in 2009 by sculptor Omri Amrany, this monument honors Josh Gibson, who was a dominant catcher in the Negro Leagues. The work recognizes a player whose skills in that separate league became legendary before baseball's integration.

The statue stands alongside sculptures of Walter Johnson and Frank Howard, forming a collection of baseball figures who shaped the sport. Visitors can see how these athletes are connected through their place in the game's history.

The statue is located in the outdoor public area of the stadium and is easily accessible when exploring the grounds. Visit during pleasant weather to fully enjoy viewing and photographing the work.

During the creation process, the sculptor collaborated with Sean Gibson, the player's great-grandson, to ensure accurate representation. This partnership helped the sculpture reflect genuine details and authentic family connections to the honored athlete.
