Jordan Lake, Water reservoir in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States.
Jordan Lake is a reservoir in Chatham County, North Carolina, covering several thousand acres and reaching up to 16 miles (26 kilometers) in length and 5 miles (8 kilometers) in width. The water fills the New Hope Valley and forms a heavily indented shoreline with many coves and wooded peninsulas.
The reservoir was formed in 1974 through the New Hope Lake Project after severe floods in 1945. It was named after Senator B. Everett Jordan, who supported the project.
The lake waters cover former communities, including Seaforth, Farrington, Lane, and Friendship, where integrated neighborhoods existed after the Civil War.
The recreation area has seven access points with over a thousand campsites, boat ramps, swimming areas, and about 15 miles (24 kilometers) of hiking trails. Most facilities open from spring through fall, though some areas remain accessible in winter.
The reservoir serves as a major nesting site for bald eagles, which visitors can watch from designated platforms throughout the year. Beneath the water lie several former communities, including Seaforth and Farrington, which were submerged when the lake was filled.
