Lake Mattoon, body of water

Lake Mattoon is a large reservoir in Illinois created in the 1950s to supply water to nearby cities. The water is over 30 feet deep in some spots, while much of the lake is shallower, making it suitable for different types of activities.

The reservoir was created in the 1950s as an infrastructure project to supply water to the region. Since then it has grown into a popular recreational destination where generations of families have built memories of fishing, boating, and camping.

The lake's name connects it to the nearby city of Mattoon and its local water supply system. Today it serves as a gathering place where residents spend weekends fishing, boating, and camping together.

Two campgrounds around the lake are open from spring through fall and offer sites with electric and water hookups for visitors. The marina on the west side rents boats, while the public beach across the road is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day for swimming and relaxation.

The area around the lake shifts notably with the seasons - birds arrive in spring to nest while the water fills with boaters in summer. These seasonal changes shape the experience depending on when visitors arrive.
