Limberlost Swamp, Natural wetland reserve in Adams and Jay Counties, Indiana, United States.
Limberlost Swamp is a restored wetland in Adams and Jay Counties with multiple ecosystems supporting native plants and wildlife. The Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve features walking paths and wooden boardwalks that let visitors move through the wetlands.
The original wetland was extensively drained between 1888 and 1910 to make way for farming. Restoration work started in 1991 to bring back this habitat.
Gene Stratton-Porter captured this place in novels and photographs that reflected the natural world around her. Her books like Freckles and A Girl of the Limberlost show how the swamp shaped the stories and imagination of people living nearby.
Walking paths and wooden boardwalks make it easy to explore the wetlands without getting muddy or wet. Visit during drier periods to avoid slippery surfaces and get the best views.
The name comes from a hunter called Limber Jim Corbus who vanished in the swamp, and locals began calling it Limberlost. This tale remains part of the area's folklore.
