Lincoln the Lawyer, Bronze sculpture in Urbana, Illinois, US.
Lincoln the Lawyer is a bronze sculpture in Urbana that portrays Abraham Lincoln seated on a chair with a law book in hand. The monument stands at the intersection of Race Street and Main Street in Carle Park, capturing him during his years practicing law.
The sculpture was created in 1927 by artist Lorado Taft to honor Lincoln's years traveling as a circuit lawyer. He worked throughout the region between 1837 and 1848, building his legal reputation before his political career.
The statue stands in Carle Park near Urbana High School, marking the legal heritage of Illinois through its most notable historical figure.
The monument was restored in 2003 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2004. Visitors can view it anytime in the park free of charge, as it stands in a public outdoor setting.
The statue was funded by a bequest from Mrs. J.O. Cunningham, who had personally known Lincoln during his years as a traveling lawyer. Her generosity allowed this memorial to be built as a lasting tribute to his legal career.
