Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Performing arts center at University of Illinois, Urbana, United States.
Krannert Center is a performing arts center at the University of Illinois in Urbana, featuring four main theaters: the Foellinger Great Hall, Tryon Festival Theatre, Colwell Playhouse, and Studio Theatre. These spaces allow both large productions and smaller performances to happen in one facility.
The center opened in 1969 thanks to a donation from industrialist Herman C. Krannert and his wife Ellnora, with architecture designed by Max Abramovitz. This private gift made it possible to build such an extensive performing arts facility.
The center presents performances throughout the year, ranging from classical music to contemporary dance, featuring both local and international artists. These shows have become central to how the university community experiences the arts.
The facility has several cafes and bars, including Stage 5 Bar in the main lobby and Intermezzo Cafe for meals and drinks. You can get refreshments before or after attending a show.
The main lobby floor is made of teak wood from Thailand while the walls feature marble from Carrara, Italy. These international materials give the entrance area a special quality that many visitors overlook.
