Lenox Hill Hospital, Medical center in Upper East Side Manhattan, United States.
Lenox Hill Hospital is a medical center in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, United States. The complex occupies ten buildings arranged on a city block between East 76th and East 77th Streets, from Lexington Avenue to Park Avenue.
The institution began in 1857 as the German Dispensary, created to serve immigrant communities arriving in New York City. In 1918, during World War I, the name was changed to Lenox Hill Hospital to reflect a shift away from its German roots.
The hospital originated from community leaders' initiative to provide medical services to immigrant populations in New York City during the nineteenth century.
The hospital holds around 450 beds and provides emergency care, surgery, heart and vascular services, neurology, and orthopedic treatment through dedicated departments. The facility is a large urban complex that spans multiple city blocks.
The facility opened the first tuberculosis division in a general hospital in the United States in 1907, as well as the first physical therapy department in the country. Both services were new developments in American hospital care at the time and set a model for other medical institutions.
