Looking Glass Falls, Waterfall in Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina, United States
Looking Glass Falls is a waterfall in Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina, that drops over a high granite wall into a deep pool below. The water descends roughly 60 feet and strikes dark rock formations, while a rounded basin forms at the base, surrounded by dense woodland.
The waterfall sits within land designated as part of Pisgah National Forest in the early 20th century. Logging activity had altered much of the region before the federal government acquired the area and opened it for recreation.
The cascade takes its name from a nearby rock formation where winter ice reflects light like a mirror. Visitors in autumn often notice how the foliage mirrors itself in the calm sections of the pool, creating a doubled display of color.
The site sits directly off Highway 276 with a parking area and stairs leading to several viewing points at different heights. The pool at the base of the falls is accessible via a short trail and offers a close view of the falling water.
During winter months, ice builds up along the edges of the falls and transforms the cascade into a collection of glittering structures. Some of these formations hang several feet over the water and shift daily depending on temperature and flow.
