Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Skating Rink, Memorial skating rink in Hyannis, United States.
The Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Skating Rink was an ice skating facility in Hyannis that began as an outdoor venue before being enclosed with a roof. The ice surface measured approximately 215 feet long and 85 feet wide.
The rink opened in 1957 with support from the Kennedy family foundation. It remained an important winter sports venue for the region until its demolition in 2009.
The rink served as a gathering place where local hockey teams and figure skaters trained regularly for many years. For many people in the area, learning to skate here was a formative childhood experience.
The facility operated during the winter season and served both organized sports teams and individual visitors who wanted to practice. Since its closure in 2009, visitors can only view a commemorative marker at the original site.
The rink was named after Lieutenant Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., the older brother of President John F. Kennedy. The memorial continues to hold significance in the local community even though the building itself is gone.
