Cape Cod Melody Tent, Circular tent theater in Hyannis, United States
The Cape Cod Melody Tent is a circular tent theater in Hyannis with around 2,300 seats and hosts concerts and theatrical productions. The structure combines a portable tent roof with modern interior features and professional sound systems.
The theater was founded in 1950 as the Cape Cod Music Circus and was originally part of the touring theater movement. After several changes in ownership, South Shore Playhouse Associates acquired the venue in 1990 and established it as a permanent location.
The venue is known among visitors for its unusual theater-in-the-round format, which creates an intimate connection between audience and performers. This circular layout lets spectators experience shows from different vantage points and feel closer to the action than they would in a traditional theater.
The theater operates mainly during warmer months and offers outdoor seating under protective tent architecture. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and bring light clothing, as ventilation through the cupola design provides natural air circulation.
The theater is part of a rare group of only two continuously operating tent theaters-in-the-round in North America. This rarity makes it a living example of a nearly extinct form of theater architecture and operation.
