Lula G. Scott Community Center, National Register of Historic Places community center in Shady Side, Maryland.
The Lula G. Scott Community Center consists of two frame buildings joined together with architectural features from 1920s educational facilities. The structure preserves the original layout of two separate school buildings and was later expanded with modern spaces to serve the community today.
The facility began as two separate Rosenwald Schools built in 1921 and 1926. These schools combined in 1953 to create an expanded educational center for the region.
The center represents educational progress for African American communities through the Rosenwald Schools initiative. You can still see the spaces that once taught students and reflect the vision of Rosenwald and Washington.
The center offers a Senior Nutrition Program with daily lunches and health services available. The facility is located on Shady Side Road and operates regularly throughout the week.
The facility still preserves its original classroom layout from its school days. This original room arrangement gives visitors insight into how education took place within these spaces.
