The site was established through legislation in 1683 and served as the county's administrative center and a vital point on the trade route between Boston and Charleston. This role made it a busy hub for commerce and travel during the colonial period.

The residence displays how a private home evolved to serve the community's poorest residents over time. Walking through it, you notice the modifications made to accommodate multiple families under one roof.

The site opens Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM during winter months, with guided tours available through historical areas and gardens. Wearing sturdy shoes is helpful since the grounds have extensive pathways connecting different sections.
