Colonial Annapolis Historic District, Historic district in Annapolis, United States.
The Colonial Annapolis Historic District is a neighborhood in Annapolis containing about 120 original buildings from the 18th century arranged along circular streets. These streets radiate outward from the State House and St. Anne's Church, creating a distinctive street pattern throughout the area.
Francis Nicholson designed this planned colonial city in 1695 with the State Circle and Church Circle serving as focal points for government and religious institutions. The neighborhood developed around these two central areas and has maintained its original layout over the centuries.
The Maryland Hall for Creative Arts hosts several resident companies performing ballet, symphony, opera, and choral music throughout the year. These organizations shape the cultural life of this neighborhood and draw visitors interested in attending performances.
Guided tours of the district start at Main Street and lead visitors through historic buildings, many of which are open to the public. The neighborhood is mostly flat and easy to explore on foot, allowing for leisurely walks at a relaxed pace.
The Maryland State House, located within the district, is the oldest state capitol building in continuous legislative use. The chamber inside has served its purpose without interruption since its completion.
