Macedonian Monument, Naval monument at United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, US
The Macedonian Monument is a wooden sculpture at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis that depicts Alexander the Great wearing a ruffled collar and feathered helmet. The figure rests on a stone base adorned with corner cannons.
The sculpture originates from a ship's figurehead of HMS Macedonian, a British warship captured by Stephen Decatur in a naval battle during the War of 1812. The monument was established to honor this important victory for the American Navy.
The monument displays naval tradition through its use of ship components and maritime design elements typical of early 19th century warships. Visitors can observe these crafted details while examining the stone base and its decorative features.
The monument sits at the end of Stribling Walk opposite Mahan Hall and is easy to locate. The grounds are pedestrian-friendly, allowing you to view the sculpture from all angles.
The stone base underwent complete restoration in 2014 and was funded by the Academy class of 1973. A bronze relief sculpture by artist Edward Berge depicting the ship's capture adorns the base.
