Three Mile Oak, Historical landmark in Parole, Maryland.
Three Mile Oak is a historical landmark in Parole, Maryland, located at the intersection of West Street and Route 178 that commemorates a large white oak tree that once stood three miles from the State House. A commemorative marker and a replacement oak tree planted in 1967 mark the site today.
The original tree became famous in December 1783 when General George Washington traveled beneath it on his way to Annapolis to resign as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Armies. It remained standing for more than a century until it fell in 1909.
The location served as a traditional gathering spot where residents of Annapolis would meet to welcome important visitors and escort them into the city. This role made it a meaningful social gathering point in the region.
The location sits at a busy street intersection in Parole and is easy to find while exploring the area. Nearby restaurants and businesses make it simple to include a visit while doing other activities in the neighborhood.
A large cross-section of the original trunk, which was about 6 feet across, is preserved and displayed at Anne Arundel Community College for visitors to see. This preserved piece gives a tangible sense of the tree's impressive size.
