Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge

The refuge spans 5,871 acres of salt marshes, ponds, forests, grasslands, cedar swamps, and cranberry bogs intersected by Waquoit Bay in Cape Cod.

Established in 1995, this conservation area became part of the Eastern Massachusetts National Wildlife Refuge Complex to protect local ecosystems and endangered species.

Eight conservation landowners jointly manage the refuge, creating educational programs and community events focused on environmental awareness and wildlife protection.

Visitors can explore numerous marked trails throughout five recreational areas, including Pickerel Cove, Makepeace Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Quashnet River Corridor.

The refuge ranks as the second largest accessible open space on Cape Cod, featuring Atlantic white cedar swamps where New England cottontail rabbits make their home.
