Mashpee River Reservation, Protected area in Mashpee, Massachusetts, US.
Mashpee River Reservation is a protected area with woodlands, wetlands, and trails along a five-mile tidal river that flows into Popponesset Bay. The landscape includes diverse habitats that support many plants and animals throughout the year.
In the early 1900s, John W. Farley acquired land along the Mashpee River and developed a campground there. He donated the property in 1959, leading to its protection as a public reservation.
The Mashpee River holds deep meaning for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, who have lived with and cared for this land for centuries. Today, members continue to use and value this place as part of their ongoing relationship with the natural world.
Two miles of marked trails run through the area and connect to the broader Cape Cod Pathways for hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography. Wearing sturdy footwear is recommended since some paths pass through wet terrain.
The river system maintains natural spawning grounds and water conditions that support one of Massachusetts' largest populations of sea-run brook trout. These fish are notable for their migrations between fresh and salt water.
