Macedonia Church

Macedonia Church is a wooden church building in Burlington with a stone foundation, weatherboard siding, three side windows, and a short bell tower. The structure sits elevated on Macedonia Ridge and displays the straightforward yet sturdy construction typical of houses of worship from this period.

The church originated in 1849 when freed slaves from Virginia joined local Baptists to establish a congregation on land near Burlington. This community became a foundation for spiritual and social growth in the surrounding area.

The building served as a gathering place for the local Black community and inspired the founding of eight additional churches across the region. It shows how important such spaces were for people seeking connection and shared faith.

The building is undergoing a major renovation scheduled for completion in fall 2024, with improvements to doors, windows, and electrical systems. The location sits visibly from the road and is relatively easy to access, though visitors should note that entry may be limited during ongoing work.

This structure is Ohio's only remaining antebellum Black church building and participates in the National Underground Railroad Network. This connection highlights its role in a larger network of places that symbolized freedom and safety for people seeking escape.
