Midtown Plaza, Indoor mall in Rochester, United States.
Midtown Plaza is a retail complex in Rochester with an attached 18-story office tower located in the downtown business district. The buildings are connected and form a single unified structure serving both shopping and office needs.
Midtown Plaza opened in 1962 as the first indoor urban shopping mall in the United States. Its construction established a new model for downtown retail development that influenced cities across the country.
The Clock of Nations served as the mall's centerpiece, displaying mechanical figures from different cultures that performed hourly. These animated shows drew visitors who gathered to watch the performances during their shopping trips.
The complex includes a connected parking garage and multiple retail spaces with direct access to downtown public transportation. Visitors can easily park their cars or use the transit system to reach the location.
Until the 1980s, a monorail circled through the mall's central atrium during the Christmas season, offering rides to children. This attraction was a memorable part of holiday shopping for many families who visited the center.
