Mount Van Hoevenberg, Mountain summit in Adirondack High Peaks region, United States
Mount Van Hoevenberg is a forested summit in the Adirondack High Peaks region of New York State, with slopes covered in mixed woodland. At its base sits the Olympic Sports Complex, which hosts bobsled, luge, skeleton, and cross-country ski tracks built for competition use.
The mountain was named after Henry Van Hoevenberg, a 19th-century adventurer who knew the Adirondacks well. It came to international attention when it served as a venue for the Winter Olympics in 1932, and then again in 1980.
The mountain is closely tied to winter sports culture in the region, having hosted Olympic competitions twice. Visitors can watch athletes train on the bobsled and luge tracks during certain periods of the year.
Parking is available near the Olympic Sports Complex, which serves as a good starting point for hiking the mountain. Trails vary in difficulty, so wearing sturdy footwear is a good idea regardless of which route you choose.
Mount Van Hoevenberg is one of only a handful of places in the United States where an Olympic-grade bobsled track is still in operation. In summer, a wheeled version of the ride is sometimes offered to the public, letting visitors experience the track outside of the winter season.
