New York's 17th congressional district is an electoral area in southern New York State covering communities north of New York City. The district includes all of Rockland County and Putnam County, plus the northern portions of Westchester County and a section of southern Dutchess County.
Before 2013, the district included parts of the Bronx with neighborhoods such as Norwood and Riverdale. Following redistricting, the boundaries shifted further north toward suburban areas along the Hudson River.
The population of 772,624 residents represents diverse communities, with 64.4% White, 19.9% Hispanic, 7.1% Black, 5% Asian, and strong Jewish communities.
The elected representative serves residents of the district in the House of Representatives in Washington. Terms last two years, and elections take place in even-numbered years.
In 2022, Mike Lawler won the seat, becoming the first Republican representative since 1981. The result surprised many observers in an area that had leaned Democratic for decades.
