Northpoint Training Center, Medium security correctional facility in Burgin, Kentucky
Northpoint Training Center is a medium security correctional facility located on roughly 221 acres with over 50 buildings, including open dormitories for general population and separate units for inmates requiring special management. The facility houses approximately 1,230 adult male inmates and is secured by two 12-foot fences with razor wire, electronic detection systems, and four guard towers.
The facility started as Kentucky State Hospital and later served as Darnell Hospital for psychiatric treatment. During World War II from 1941 to 1946, it operated as a prisoner of war camp for German captives before eventually being converted into a correctional facility.
The facility offers educational programs including GED completion, adult basic education, substance abuse treatment, and vocational training for incarcerated individuals. These services reflect a commitment to helping people develop skills during their time here.
The facility is not open to the public and there are no tours available for casual visitors. Information about the center can be obtained through Kentucky Department of Corrections if you need details for research or administrative purposes.
In August 2009, a major uprising involving over 60 inmates resulted in five buildings being destroyed by fire. This incident highlighted the operational challenges that can arise in managing a facility of this scale.
