Norton Village Historic District
Norton Village Historic District, Historic district in Rochester, United States.
The Norton Village Historic District contains 144 two-story residential buildings spread across four main groupings on 18 acres of land. Each structure holds two residential units, creating a total of 288 apartments within the boundaries of the district.
The district opened in 1949 as part of a housing initiative designed to serve veterans returning from World War II and their families. This project represented one of the early planned residential communities built to support veterans as they returned to civilian life.
The buildings display Colonial Revival features with symmetrical facades and traditional architectural details. This design approach shapes the overall appearance of the residential settlement and conveys to visitors how people chose to live in the postwar years.
The district is best explored on foot, with open pathways connecting the different building clusters throughout the site. Walking at an easy pace allows visitors to observe how the community is laid out and structured across the landscape.
The district includes dedicated community and recreation spaces that residents use throughout their daily lives. These special facilities were part of the original design and show how planners intended to create a complete living community rather than just individual houses.
