East Avenue Historic District, Historic district in Rochester, New York.

The East Avenue Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Rochester containing approximately 700 buildings spread across 362 acres, including mansions, houses of worship, and other structures. The architecture ranges from Greek Revival and Italianate to Queen Anne and Renaissance Revival styles, spanning roughly 150 years of construction.

The neighborhood developed in the 19th century as wealthy factory owners and business leaders built their mansions in the area. In 1979 it received designation on the National Register of Historic Places to protect these architectural treasures for future generations.

The district functions as a residential neighborhood showcasing grand homes and houses of worship built by Rochester's prosperous families over generations. Walking through the streets reveals how these structures shaped the identity of the area and reflect the aspirations of those who built them.

The district is best explored on foot, allowing visitors to observe the various architectural styles along the walkable streets. Visitors should allow plenty of time to wander through all the streets and corners of this expansive area.

The Culver House was built between 1805 and 1816 and displays early American construction methods using materials and techniques from that era. What makes it remarkable is that this entire building was relocated to its present location in 1906 to save it from demolition.
