Oak Orchard Light, Lake Ontario lighthouse in Point Breeze, United States
Oak Orchard Light is a lighthouse at the mouth of Oak Orchard Creek on the shore of Lake Ontario. The structure stands about 10.5 meters tall and marks the entrance to the creek, helping to guide ships safely through the waters.
The original lighthouse began operating in 1871 and shone from a wooden pier over the lake. Winter storms destroyed the original structure in 1916, and the building standing today is a replica constructed in 2010.
The lighthouse takes its name from the nearby Oak Orchard Creek and attracts visitors interested in Great Lakes shipping history. Today guests can see maritime objects and learn about the role these structures played in protecting vessels.
The building is open to visitors on Friday and Saturday afternoons as well as Sundays, particularly during summer months. Those interested can explore the interior and climb to the third floor to enjoy views over the lake.
The lighthouse contains a modern Marine LED light with a specialized Fresnel lens and operates only during the shipping season from April through November. This seasonal operation shows how navigation aids adapt to the yearly patterns of lake traffic.
