Old Bacon Academy

The Old Bacon Academy is a listed historic building featuring a red brick structure in Flemish bond style that rises three stories. The facade displays nine distinct window sections, giving the building a balanced and well-proportioned appearance.

The building was established in 1803 following a generous donation from Pierpont Bacon and originally served as a school for white boys. Over the course of the 19th century, the academy gradually opened its doors to new groups of students and became central to regional education.

The academy served as a gathering place where the community attended lectures and assemblies throughout the 19th century. Visitors can still sense how education shaped the social life of Colchester residents during that era.
