Ohio Caverns, Natural limestone cave system in West Liberty, United States.
Ohio Caverns is a limestone cave system in West Liberty with multiple underground chambers. The rooms are lined with white calcium carbonate crystal formations that extend from floor to ceiling.
Farm workers discovered the cave system in 1897 while investigating a sinkhole. This led to the first organized tours for visitors beginning in the early 1900s.
Native American tribes of the region considered the caves sacred spaces and left artifacts that provide information about their connection to these geological formations.
The cave is visited daily with guided tours, and the temperature remains consistent throughout the year. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the paths can be uneven.
Two special formations named Crystal King and Palace are among the most notable features of the cave. These stalactite and stalagmite pairs developed over millions of years and shape the appearance of the chambers.
