Old Pottstown Historic District

Old Pottstown Historic District is an area containing residential and commercial buildings from different centuries, spreading along High Street and through several adjacent street blocks. The buildings display Renaissance Revival and other historical architectural styles, giving the place an appearance shaped by its long past.

The area was founded by John Potts, an iron master who established the town in 1761 near his forge by the Schuylkill River. From this beginning as an industrial site, the area developed over the centuries into a place with diverse buildings and uses.

The buildings display different architectural styles from different periods, ranging from early simple homes to more ornate structures from the late 19th century. Walking through the streets, you can clearly observe how construction methods and design preferences evolved across generations.

The district is best explored on foot and concentrates on a connected area, making navigating and discovering relatively simple. Sidewalks are present, and you can pass by many buildings to observe their different features.

Several churches from different denominations stand alongside each other in this area, reflecting the religious diversity of the community. These side-by-side places of worship from the 19th century show how different groups lived together in this place.
