Oliver P. Morton, Bronze memorial at Indiana Statehouse, Indianapolis, US

The Oliver P. Morton monument is a bronze sculpture on the east side of the Indiana Statehouse featuring three figures, with Morton standing in the center between two Union soldiers holding military equipment. The entire composition rests on a substantial granite pedestal and weighs approximately 16,000 pounds.

The monument was unveiled in 1907 and commemorates Governor Oliver P. Morton, who led Indiana through the Civil War and championed the Union cause. His influence on the state's war-related decisions shaped a crucial chapter in the nation's history.

The bronze reliefs show Morton delivering speeches and visiting military hospitals, reflecting his personal commitment to Indiana's soldiers during wartime. These scenes on the monument tell the story of his hands-on dedication to the troops.

The memorial is located on the east side of the Indiana Statehouse and is easily accessible from the main building. Visitors should note that it is an outdoor installation available to view at any time of day.

Austrian sculptor Rudolf Schwarz incorporated symbolic elements into the design, including crossed flags adorned with olive branches. The wreath at the base features oak leaves, representing strength and endurance.
