Indiana Statehouse

The Indiana Statehouse is a government building in downtown Indianapolis featuring Neoclassical architecture with limestone walls, grand columns, and a central dome rising above a four-story structure. The interior is organized around legislative chambers and ceremonial spaces that occupy the main floors of the building.

Construction of this governmental center began in 1865 under architect Edwin May and reached completion in 1888. The project extended over two decades and represented a major investment in the state's institutional presence.

The building houses over 40 public artworks including sculptures and a large mural depicting the Spirit of Indiana. These pieces are woven throughout the interior spaces that visitors walk through each day.

Visitors can participate in guided tours throughout the year to learn about Indiana government operations and view the legislative chambers. The building sits in a central location that is easy to reach on foot and explore at a comfortable pace.

The central rotunda features an intricate pattern of Italian marble floors beneath a dome that allows natural light to stream through the interior corridors. This luminous space creates a distinctive environment that sets it apart from typical government buildings.
