Ozark Caverns, Show cave in Lake of the Ozarks State Park, Missouri, US.
Ozark Caverns is a natural limestone cave extending about one mile underground with water-carved passages and mineral deposits spread throughout its connected chambers. The system features varied ceiling heights and ground formations created entirely by water action over geological time.
Exploration of the cave system began in the 1880s as local people discovered its passages. The cave was developed for visitors during the 1930s when the Lake of the Ozarks reservoir was constructed nearby, bringing increased regional development.
The cave walls bear ancient claw marks left by prehistoric animals that once sought shelter in these passages. These marks reveal a long history of animal life moving through the underground chambers over thousands of years.
Visitors can only enter through guided tours available primarily from June through August, when the cave operates seasonally. Hand-held lanterns provide the only light since artificial lighting is not used, so wear sturdy shoes and move carefully through narrow passages.
The Angel Showers formation features water streams falling from the ceiling into calcite pools, a rare phenomenon found in only about 14 locations worldwide. This natural waterfall inside the cave creates one of the most distinctive features within its chambers.
