Paintsville Lake, reservoir in Kentucky, United States
Paintsville Lake is a large reservoir in Kentucky created by damming Paint Creek. The water is surrounded by dense forest and gentle hills, with a long curving shoreline and multiple boat launch docks throughout the area.
The reservoir was completed in 1983, transforming Paint Creek from a flowing river into a calm body of water. During dam construction in 1978, heavy rainfall created a critical moment when the structure nearly failed, but the dam held firm and the area stabilized.
The reservoir takes its name from Paint Creek, the waterway dammed to create it. Locals regard this spot as a special place for family outings and quiet afternoons, where spending time by the water is a valued tradition.
The lake is located near the town of Paintsville and is easily accessible by car, with clear signage to guide you. The adjacent state park offers picnic areas and simple walking trails along the water for visitors of all abilities.
The water reaches depths of over 1,000 feet (300 m) near the dam, making it exceptionally deep in spots. This considerable depth is part of a larger network of lakes and rivers across Kentucky that supplies water to the region and provides recreation opportunities.
