Pemberton Hall, Women's residence hall at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, US.
Pemberton Hall is a four-story residence building designed in classical collegiate Gothic style, featuring large windows, ornate cornices, and shared spaces on each floor. The structure housed over 200 students in different room types, with the former gymnasium now serving as the university honors college.
The building was constructed in 1909 when the campus was Eastern Illinois State Normal School, funded through legislative support from State Senator Stanton C. Pemberton. The residence hall takes its name from the senator who secured the funding for its construction.
The first-floor parlor was where residents gathered for social activities and celebrations that shaped daily student life. This space still reflects the importance of shared moments in building connections among those who lived here.
The building is part of the university campus and visitors can view the exterior, though interior common areas are designated for current students. It helps to walk around the structure from different angles to fully appreciate the Gothic architectural details.
The fourth floor was originally designed as quarters for live-in staff who maintained the residence. Today this space serves as storage, but its original layout remains a reminder of how the building once reflected the social divisions of its era.
