Stone Quarry Bridge, Historic truss bridge near Charleston, Illinois
Stone Quarry Bridge is a steel structure spanning the Embarras River in Illinois using a double-intersection Pratt truss design with diagonal supports throughout its framework. The bridge remains in use for vehicle traffic and maintains its original construction from the 1880s.
King Iron Bridge Company constructed this structure in 1883, making it the oldest surviving truss bridge in Coles County. The bridge was built during a period of expanding iron and steel construction in the American Midwest.
The bridge connects to the heritage of local industrial development, as its name stems from its location near the Charleston Stone Company quarry.
The bridge is accessible via Township Road 1000N and remains open to normal vehicle traffic. Visitors can easily walk along the structure or photograph it from the road.
The portals at each end have different heights, with the eastern opening lower than the western one. This asymmetrical design follows the natural slope of the river's banks beneath the bridge.
