Pittsburgh Terminal Properties
Pittsburgh Terminal Properties, Historic warehouse complex in South Side Flats, Pittsburgh, US.
Description
Pittsburgh Terminal Properties is a warehouse complex of interconnected buildings designed to handle efficient transfer between road, river, and rail transportation. The structure uses a distinctive bridge spanning Cabot Way to connect its two main sections.
History
The complex was constructed from 1904 to 1906 following Charles Bickel's design and represented a major investment in Pittsburgh's transportation infrastructure. These buildings arose during a period when the city was rapidly becoming a major trade hub.
Culture
The complex served military operations during World War II when one of its floors stored ammunition for the US War Department. This role shows how industrial facilities in Pittsburgh contributed to the nation's defense efforts.
Practical
The site is now accessible as River Walk Corporate Centre, where visitors can explore office space and retail areas. The riverside location helps with orientation and the neighborhood is easily reached from downtown.
Did you know?
The complex spans approximately 868,000 square feet and was planned with a single bridge structure carrying Terminal Way across Cabot Way to bind its dispersed sections together. This engineering solution allowed a continuous transportation network to function across a heavily divided site.
