Poole Forge, distrikt historik në Shtetet e Bashkuara
Poole Forge is a historic iron manufacturing site in Lancaster County spanning 26 acres along Conestoga Creek. The grounds contain a stone mansion built after 1779, a covered bridge from 1859, remnants of old water wheel races, wildflower meadows, and woodland trails that reveal the layout of the former industrial complex.
James Old established the forge in 1775 after immigrating from Wales, processing pig iron for blacksmiths and the military during colonial times. After his son Davis took over in 1795, the works operated until 1852, and the site was recognized as a historic place in 1993.
The name Poole Forge reflects the Welsh settlers who arrived in the 1700s and established ironmaking in this region. Today, visitors and locals use the grounds for weddings, family celebrations, and community gatherings, bringing the historic mansion and gardens to life throughout the year.
The site is open daily from dawn to dusk for walking, biking, and fishing along the waterway. Visitors should note that swimming and water sports are not permitted to protect the local aquatic environment.
Visitors can spot carved inscriptions inside the 1859 covered bridge showing names and dates that earlier visitors etched into wooden beams over the decades. These informal marks document a century-long practice of people leaving their marks at the site.
