Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest, State forest in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest is a woodland area in Virginia with mixed pine and hardwood stands surrounding Twin Lakes State Park. Multiple blocks of land connected throughout the property feature forest habitat in various stages of growth along the Sandy River.
The forest began in 1919 with a donation of 588 acres from Emmett Dandridge Gallion, marking the start of Virginia's state forest system. Between 1933 and 1941, the Civilian Conservation Corps built fire towers, fire lanes, and created two lakes at Camp Gallion.
Camp Gallion housed the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1390, which constructed fire towers, fire lanes, and created two lakes between 1933 and 1941.
A State Forest Use Permit is required for activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and trapping in the forest. The area is well-laid out with marked trails for different user types throughout the property.
The forest has more than 20 miles of combined trails and paths connecting different forest types and rivers. Much of this trail network was created by the same workers who began replanting the land nearly a century ago.
