Portrait of History, Bronze sculpture at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, US
Portrait of History is a bronze sculpture located on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. The work features a tapering cylindrical form topped with a rounded head and flanked by wing-like extensions that give it an organic, dynamic presence.
The sculpture was created in 1997 by Chinese-American brothers Shan Zuo and Da Huang Zhou, who were working from their Chicago studio at the time. The work was later donated to the institution, becoming a permanent fixture on the campus.
The sculpture represents the artistic collaboration of Chinese-American brothers Shan Zuo and Da Huang Zhou, who established their studio in Chicago after leaving China.
The sculpture is positioned near the Blackford Street entrance of the Herron School of Art and Design, making it easy to locate on the IUPUI campus. Its location along a main walkway means visitors often encounter it when moving through the grounds.
The bronze surface has a rough, uneven texture that resembles mud or wrapped gauze, creating striking plays of light and shadow as the sun moves throughout the day. This tactile quality gives the sculpture a worn, weathered appearance despite its permanent installation.
