Spaces with Iron, Cast iron sculpture at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, United States.
Spaces with Iron is a sculpture made of cast iron and bronze located on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. The work features two parallel rectangular forms connected at their base by an iron piece.
The sculpture was created by Will Horwitt in 1972 and originally stood on the Newfields grounds. It was relocated to the IUPUI campus in 2009 through a long-term loan agreement.
The sculpture forms part of Indianapolis public art collection, which includes over 135 outdoor pieces distributed across educational institutions and public spaces.
The sculpture stands on the southeast lawn of the Science Building at the intersection of Blackford and Vermont Streets. It is easily accessible on foot from the campus grounds.
The geometric forms create negative spaces within the work, emphasizing how solid materials interact with empty voids. This interplay invites visitors to view the piece from multiple angles as they walk around it.
