Reedy Island Range Rear Light, Navigation lighthouse in Taylors Corner, New Castle County, US.
Reedy Island Range Rear Light is a skeletal iron tower rising 34 meters above the Delaware River and displaying a fixed red light to guide ships safely through the waterway. The structure uses modern navigation equipment to assist vessels passing through this busy river corridor.
The lighthouse was built in 1910 as part of a major river dredging project to guide ships through the waterway. It replaced a temporary lighting system that had operated since 1904 using equipment originally from a locomotive.
The structure exhibits Colonial Revival architecture and demonstrates early 20th-century engineering methods through its cast-iron tower design.
You can reach the lighthouse by traveling along Route 9 near the Delaware River. Access to the interior is not available since it remains an active navigation aid for river traffic.
The structure stands on nine concrete piers driven deep into the river bottom for stability. The current electronic beacon system replaced an older Fresnel lens that originally guided ships along this stretch of water.
