Red River Zoo, Wildlife sanctuary in Fargo, North Dakota.
Red River Zoo is a zoo in Fargo, North Dakota, devoted to animals from cold and temperate northern climates, with species from regions as far as Siberia and the Canadian Arctic. The grounds are laid out as open-air enclosures connected by walking paths through planted areas.
The zoo opened in 1999 after a private family donated land to the Fargo Park District, making it possible to build a standalone animal facility in the region. From the start, the focus was placed on cold-climate species, which shaped the entire direction of the collection.
The zoo focuses on animals from cold northern regions, including species from Siberia and Canada that are rarely seen in captivity elsewhere. Visitors who take time to walk through the exhibits often find that many of the animals are unfamiliar, which makes the experience more personal and slower-paced.
The zoo is entirely outdoors, so the experience changes a lot depending on the season, and winter visits can be cold in this part of North Dakota. Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing make a real difference, especially during spring and fall when temperatures vary through the day.
The zoo has a restored carousel from the 1920s that originally belonged to a local family and still runs for visitors today. Carousels of this age and condition are rare to find operating outside of dedicated museums, which makes its presence here something worth noticing.
