Ringing rocks, Geological formation in Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania, United States
Ringing Rocks is a boulder field spanning about 123 acres near Upper Black Eddy, filled with diabase stones throughout. These rocks produce clear, ringing tones when struck with a hammer or hard object.
The site was purchased in 1895 by Abel B. Haring to protect the rocks from development and commercial use. This acquisition preserved the location as a natural wonder rather than allowing it to be built over.
Visitors come here to create their own music by striking the rocks with hammers they bring along. Making sounds from the stones has become a hands-on activity that draws curious travelers and families.
The field is open to visitors year-round and works well as a day visit. Bring a hammer along to test the sounding qualities of the rocks yourself.
The stones contain internal stresses that allow them to ring like bells when struck at just the right angle. This natural quality turns each strike into a small musical discovery.
