Republic Airport, airport in New York, United States of America
Republic Airport is a general aviation airport in East Farmingdale, on Long Island, New York, that serves small private and charter aircraft. It has two paved runways, a number of helipads, and on-site operators offering fueling, maintenance, and other support services.
The airport opened in 1928 as Fairchild Flying Field and quickly became the site of a major aircraft manufacturing plant. During World War II, the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter was built here, and production continued through several more decades after the war.
The American Airpower Museum on the grounds displays wartime aircraft that visitors can walk up to and see at close range. On certain days, some of those planes are flown during live demonstrations, which draws a mix of aviation fans and families.
The airport is in East Farmingdale and is easy to reach by car, with parking available on the grounds. For those coming by public transit, the nearest stop on the Ronkonkoma rail line is a short walk away, and local buses also connect to the area.
Some of the original factory buildings from the wartime production era are still standing on the grounds and visible from the airport roads. These structures are a reminder that this site was once one of the busiest aircraft manufacturing locations on the East Coast.
