American Airpower Museum, Aviation museum at Republic Airport, United States
The American Airpower Museum is an aviation museum in East Farmingdale, New York, housed inside a former factory building on the grounds of Republic Airport. It displays World War II aircraft and military equipment inside a large hangar, where the machines are kept in their original condition.
The factory building that now houses the museum was a major production center for combat aircraft during World War II. The museum opened in 1998 and occupies the same building where many of the planes on display were originally built.
The museum sits on Republic Airport, where flying demonstrations with historic aircraft still take place on a regular basis. Visitors can walk up close to the planes and sometimes hear the engine of a still-airworthy machine warming up nearby.
The museum is in East Farmingdale on Long Island and is easiest to reach by car. It is worth checking the schedule before your visit, as flying days bring extra activity on the grounds and change the overall feel of the experience.
A C-47 transport aircraft that took part in wartime military operations is still airworthy and available for passenger flights that visitors can book. Those who board it take off from the same runways that were active during the war years.
