Residencia Aboy-Lompré, Prairie School residence in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Residencia Aboy-Lompré is a Prairie School residence in San Juan featuring a wide porch supported by two posts, decorative tiles, and a double interior staircase. The interior layout uses large rooms and wide hallways that allow natural light and air to move freely through the space.
Built between 1910 and 1912 for the Aboy-Ferrer family, the residence was designed by architects Antonin Nechodoma and Miguel Ferrer along with engineer Francisco Pons. Upon the original owner's death, the property was divided between his two sons, resulting in two twin structures sharing the same lot.
The building now serves as home to the Shaare Zedeck Synagogue, the Jewish Community Center, and a photojournalism museum dedicated to Puerto Rico. These institutions bring daily activity and community purpose to the space.
The residence is easily accessible to visitors and located in a walkable residential neighborhood of San Juan. Plan your visit during daytime hours to fully appreciate the architecture and interior spaces.
The building displays a rare blend of Prairie School elements with local design approaches that were uncommon in San Juan architecture of that era. This combination makes it a distinctive example of early 20th century architectural experimentation in Puerto Rico.
